There are things we need. We need food, and if we go without it for too long, we will die. We need water; we need air. If we go without them for too long, the body will physically die. What of our other needs? We need shelter, but realistically, how long can we go without it? a day? a week? a month? a year? Read the rest of this entry »

Some nice thoughts for the day that I wish I had an author to credit:
Every sixty seconds you spend angry, upset or mad is a full minute of happiness you’ll never get back.
Life is short. Break the rules. Forgive quickly. Kiss slowly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we’re here we should dance.

It seems like my timing is just a little off lately. The frustrating thing is knowing that everything that happens to me happens for a reason. These missed opportunities are not that at all but likely clearing the path for even better ones. This lost love, again, intentional. Still, it would be nice to find that door they are saving, one of them, anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

In rats, I often (especially lately) have people come to me trying to get me to validate their desire to keep a single animal as a pet. Rats are social animals like people and dogs, but they live a good part of their lives in a cage. We don’t take them for walks like we do dogs where the dogs, at least, have some chance to interact Read the rest of this entry »

People call it “reaching crossroads” in their lives, and I’ve never quite understood why, exactly. Well, not until now. It makes sense that there are decisions to make, a road to choose, but there are decisions to make every day, all the time. Do we refer to a crossroad only when we have some sort of important decision to make? Read the rest of this entry »

What Gift
What gift you bear in your outstretched hand?
All shiny and new and pure,
It looks like love,
and hope,
and plans,
and dreams.
All of this for me?
For us?
I’ve seen this before.
So have you.
This promise and potential,
The last time he called it a future together.
He talked of places we’d go, of children and growing old.
What a beautiful thing to offer
For me,
For us.
I remember the last time
As I reached for it,
To accept it,
She took him back
Into Her
And his gift with him.
But She would not take me.
Is this to be again for me?
For us?
But one must not question
When such a perfect gift is offered
Such love,
Such hope,
Such plans,
A caring embrace,
A forever place,
And the giver sincere.
This must be for me,
for us.
A step forward,
I come to you
With no reservations.
With love and joy in my heart,
I’ll accept this precious chance,
This love,
These dreams
You offer to me,
To us.
Oh,
What price I pay for accepting this time?

I had a lot of stuff to do today, Michael!
This needed to be done, though. It’s been rolling around in my head. There’s this thing that has been hanging over me since, well, birth? It seems that some people don’t trust. I’ve wondered, is it only young souls who worry because of their innocence? or maybe those who are older and who have been betrayed? I think I have an answer, and you’re not going to like it: it is neither. It is those who have betrayed others. The ones who do not trust are the ones who are not trustworthy. Look into your heart, and look into the hearts of those you know and those you have loved. The ones who build the walls to keep love out, who believe that someone will betray them, are the ones who have given others reasons to build them. The rest of us still believe.

Comes The Dawn
After awhile you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love
doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t mean security,
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes open,
with the grace of a woman,
not the grief of a child,
and learn to build all your roads
on today because tomorrow’s ground
is too uncertain for plans,
and futures have a way of
falling down in mid-flight.
After awhile you learn that
even sunshine burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul,
instead of waiting
for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that
you really can endure. . .
that you really are strong
and you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn. . .
With every goodbye you learn.
